Session 5:  Using Plickers in the classroom

What is Plickers?
Plickers is an interactive live questioning tool.
  1. Teachers can ask a quiz with up to 4 multiple choice answers a, b, c or d.
  2. The question (media allowed) is displayed on the white board.
  3. The student holds up a QR card with the correct answer positioned at the top.
  4. The teacher can quickly scan each card with an app on his/her phone.
  5. A graph of all the answers is immediately displayed on the whiteboard. The correct answer is highlighted in green.
  6. The teacher then has the option of displaying/hiding individual student answers
How using Plickers benefits teaching and learning:
  1. Quite often in class it’s the same students that answer all the questions. Teachers can’t possibly ask every single student what they think the correct answer should be. But with Plickers it makes every student answer the question and the teacher can see every single students answer in just a few moments.
  2. At the start of class give students a 3 Question quiz. This is a quick way to assess did students do and understand the homework. We can instantly evaluate the results and therefore determine class groupings for the lesson in a fast and fun way.
  3. Plickers can be used during class to gauge if students are on track with the lesson and to reinforce knowledge & recap the learning.
  4. At the end of class Plickers can be used as a self-assessment tool. Plickers can be used instead of exit tickets. Ask a question and quickly gauge if students understood the lesson.
  5. It motivates students when privacy is turned off as they can compare their answers with others in the class and they can see where they are against the class curve.
  6. Exploratory learning is where students are given the opportunity to generate their own questions. Students can generate these questions on Plickers to deepen their understanding & mastery of the topic being covered.
  7. Develop students numeracy skills by analysing a bar chart and percentage of the correct answers after each question
  8. Prevents copying of answers as all QR cards are different.
